My 8th Newsletter to you & the last of this year, I would like to wish every club member the very best of the festive season to you & yours & hope that the new year brings you all joy, health & happiness.

I’d like to thank all the committee, those members who assist us in putting on events & to you for your support by your attendance. Without this, we would not be the club that we are. The waiting list to join is ever growing & is testament to our standing as a family friendly sports & social club.

The values we hold are special in this club, treating others as we would wish to be treated is a common thread. Respect to young & old while understanding each & everyone needs is part of who we are. Please continue this theme to allow harmony for all.
The new chairs have arrived which is a welcomed refresh for the club, hopefully the blinds will be finished soon to complement the upgrade. I think the look is great so well-done team.

What’s been going on
The 24hr Darts marathon in aid of Ickle Pickles & the Young Carers was completed with some very tired club members. There is still time for you to donate as there is a collection bucket in the club and also via; -

The Sunday lunch on 3rd Dec was once again a roaring success. Thanks again to our catering team on the day, consisting of Steve, Lyn, Sheils, Janine, Phil & the waitresses Millie & Lilly.

Kids Xmas Party was warmly greeted by all those who attended. A big thank you goes to Louise & Jo (& teamsters) for the fantastic Grotto & for John W for giving up his time again, not forgetting all those who offered help on the day.

Christmas Dinner Dance was at capacity for the 16th. Once again Wrights Caterers did not let us down & luckily the singer Beth carried on like a trouper despite being under the weather, she was backed up by “DJ Smashie” (aka Chris J). The ladies attending looked lovely as usual (what a treat for us guys), while the lads did dress to impress (thanks chaps). It was a great evening, made all the better for the positivity that you all brought to the evening, this absolutely made the evening. Thank you everyone for attending😊 Special praise goes all those assisting in setting up & clearing up for this event, you know who you are.

What’s been going on
The Club’s children (our future members) were given an entertaining afternoon on a very wet Sunday by Krazy Kaighley for their Halloween party. Lots of fun & games was had. Thanks to all those that helped set up the (very Spooky) hall and for the food supplied. (Sammi, Jo, Louise & the little helpers) 😊
Sunday Lunch was another successful afternoon which would not happen without the assistance of the catering team of Steve, Lyn, Sonia, Sheils, Sam & of course the lovely waitresses Lilly & Millie.😊Well done & thanks.
Elvis went down a storm with over 110 of you attending, thank you for your ongoing support. Sean had a great time & would love to appear again next year. So Mr/Mrs/Miss President next year? What’s the answer?
The as predicted, the sold-out closed event of Kojaks once again did not disappoint. I would urge all members to book early for tickets, this the third event in a row to be sold out, NYE is likely to be a similar situation.

Newsletter 6

10/30/2023

Dear Members
My 6th newsletter to you and this one comes with an appeal to all members. The club has been extremely fortunate to have had robust policies & procedures in place over the past few years which enabled us to get through the pandemic and come out the other side in healthy position.  I thank the administration for their careful work to allow this to happen as many other businesses suffered due to lack of preparedness.

Going forward we need members support to continue to keep this wonderful club in the present by continuing to maintain the existing fabric while ensuring the licenced area is always current. The present basic running costs are around £100,000 annually, allowing for one bar staff only. With 325 members is relatively easy to work out that the profit from bar takings are keeping our heads above the water, but only just. Subscriptions are currently £75 per year. This only accounts for around 25% of the basic running costs, a model which is extremely difficult to say is sustainable in its current format. We urgently need members to support the club by your regular attendance please.

With regret, I must inform members that unacceptable behaviour will not be tolerated within the club. We set high standards & expect members & their guests to abide by those standards for everyone’s benefit. The committee will take the strongest action possible against any deviation from what is considered below our expected behaviour & values.  A reminder too, that dogs are allowed in the club (there is some treats for them too on the bar) but they must always be on a short lead.

What’s been going on

We have been busy with the paint job finished (Well done Barry a Club member) & some of the new furniture arriving & put in place. No standing on them during any events. Okay😊.

Brooke Star entertained us again on the 14th due to the Queen sing-along being postponed for now. She’s back on Christmas Eve so make sure you’re there if you missed out this time.

The Beer Festival was a massive hit with many of you disappointed as it was a sell out event. We are limited on numbers in the club for safety regulations & also for the comfort of those attending. So, to prevent members missing out on events, my tip for you is to book your tickets early, especially for the rest of 2023 events.  Big thanks to all who assisted in setting up with particular thanks to Phil Dunk, Steve, Lyn & Sonia for the food provided, which was well received. The Captains Beard band have expressed a wish to come back again next year as they had so much fun, so fingers crossed the next president puts them on..

Elvis is over half way full on Nov 11th, with Kojaks at the cut off point for Nov 18th. The Christmas Dinner Dance numbers is steadily climbing & likely to sell out soon, & so it should do given the price. A reminder for you that tickets for NYE go on sale 19th November as do places for kids Christmas event which is now planned for 10th December, a slight change due to staffing.
More information soon of our annual Panto – an event not to miss. 😊

Dear members

A cheeky little update for you all in between my regular newsletter about future events laid on by the committee for the benefit of members and their guests.

Firstly, the bad news, our suppliers have raised costs some time ago, this along with the new tax on alcohol means that some (not all) prices has had to increase to ensure we remain within our pricing policy.

Our long-term maintenance of the building programme will shortly see some improvements with a fresh lick of paint which is now well overdue.  The bar area & conservatory will undergo a freshening up of the furniture which will be closely followed by the hall area upgrade (hopefully before Christmas😊).  All of this continues to ensure that we maintain a good standard for members with reliable & more importantly safe furniture. Once done the old furniture will be sold off so if you’re interested, let us know asap.

Due to demand, the committee has decided to open a little earlier on Fridays at 4pm for those needing a pick me up after a hectic working week (its not the mums before anyone says it😊), it starts this week 22nd Sept.

I know its only Sept but another look forward for you all, is the Lovel Brooke Star singing for us on Christmas Eve and getting the club open for the first time on Boxing Day. Don’t forget your tickets for these events this year; -

14th Oct – Sing-along Queen (free event)
21st Oct – Beer & Wine Festival £12 (ticket only,  hog roast & some free drinks)

Hello Members

There’s been no coup yet, which is a little disappointing. I did not think I would last this long second time around.

The usual favourites are continuing in the month with “Our Lesley’s” Bingo on the first Monday of each month, next one is 3rd July. Don’t forget to check the members run “Quiz” every Thursday, cash prizes for the lucky winners and of course the “Big Question”?

Now that the PGA & LIV golf have settled their differences, some of you now may wish to join the Carlton Club golf society? Shhh….. They were never part of LIV anyway, you only have to look at the prizes!! Just send me a note and I’ll put you onto the man who can “James”, who will supply all the necessary details on the events that they currently are involved in.

Please get your tickets early for events coming up. I really don’t want those disappointed member emails in my inbox.

I have 8 seats on a minibus available and going to Goodwood on Ladies Day 3rd August for a private event, if you are interested please let me know ASAP, there are no tickets for entry included it’s just the return bus ride, you can then chose what enclosure you wish to be in.

What’s been going on;

The lovely Brooke entertained us is the Garden recently on a beautiful May sunny day & our first garden event this year. Don’t panic if you missed her, she has promised to come back again in August, fantastic Brooke😊.

A mixture of red & blue was in for the Manchester FA cup final. The sky blues came out victorious, next year it’ll be Pompey at Wembley, or will it just be wobbly!
The dart team saw the season end the other Friday with their traditional Chinese feast mixed with a round robin of friendly games. They will also be hosting another 24hour charity dart marathon soon, please support them or come in and challenge them to a game.
The pie & a pint for a £5 on Father’s Day went well and England’s first qualifying match against Malta went as planned with a resounding win, just hope the opposition wasn’t too cross.

We had an old favourite in the Garden last Sunday, well he is the wrong side of “50” 😊 the Carlton Club welcomed the rebel song master Kev “Kojaks” Smith. A fabulous day. Thanks Kev Glastonbury’s loss our gain.

We will be having a beer festival on 21st October with those quirky sailors of “Captains Beard” back again, along with club favourites of Kojaks & Elvis returning to the club in November. These will probably be closed events so book your tickets early when out, I will let you know when.

Please do let me know if there are any particular events you wish the club to put on for your entertainment. Future events are being advertised on the TV and several notice boards along with social media.

The ongoing improvements to the club are moving in the right direction, spot the differences when you can, some may be subtle, but others will make a difference on your experience when in the club.

Bar staff would greatly appreciate empty glasses being returned to the Bar. Do not be offended if any committee member reminds you of this. Remember that smoking & vaping is only permitted in the smoking area, please do follow this ruling for members and their guests benefit.

Thanks

Hi Members

It's FA cup final this Saturday at 3pm and the big screen should be on for this. Whether your red or blue pop along for a cool beer or two.

For those wishing to watch the Champion's league final next Saturday, we have a private function on so it will only be on in the snooker room.

Hello Members

This is my first communication with you on my second stint as club president, some of you are aware that I was not planning to be president again, but we are where we are. The committee needs a mix of experience coupled the newer members to be involved with taking the club forward. We have a great committee with a possible spot available if your wishing to get involved (its not that scary). We do need a president for next year as well??

The club keeps going from strength to strength and I wish to continue that theme. So, here’s quick peak of the journey for the club that is planned for this year so far.  Its early days and any suggestions are more than welcome, speak to a committee member or drop us a note.

Last weekend’s Bank Holiday was a cracking day was outstanding weather, which we took advantage of with some music in the garden from one of our own members. Looking to do a similar event next bank holiday and throughout the summer months, weather permitting.

Father's Day Sunday 18th will have a pint a pie & roasties available for £5, names in book so we can get the correct number of pies in (let us know any dietary requirements)

25th June – Weather permitting another garden music event

15th July Creative Covers, are a 5-piece band playing popular hits from the 60`s up to the 00`s. They love nothing more than to see a full dance floor (details to follow)

23rd July – Weather permitting another Garden event

4th Aug, Goodwood Races is this year at a cost of £40. The book opens for this Monday 5th June with full payment please. There will be refreshments and snacks when we arrive at the course for all attending.

6th Aug Garden Music Event (weather permitting) bring a picnic to this event.

2nd Sept Decades, Celebrating the music of the greatest man bands. Decades Live UK a 3-piece male vocal group. This fast-paced show has something for everyone. covering 7 decades with jacket changes on stage and slick choreography. It's the show that your event needs. (details to follow)

14th Oct Beer Festival A firm favourite will be back along with a local band (details to follow)

29th Oct Kids Halloween party

16th Dec Club Christmas dinner

17th Dec Kids Christmas Party

31st Dec New Years Eve with the fabulous Komaro back to entertain us again (hopefully no accidents this time)

19th to 21st Jan is Panto time

10th Mar Mother’s Day event

7th Apr Kids Easter Party
There will be a host of other events as we plan them during the year, with many ad-hoc events. Keep an eye on your emails and social media for all of these. I would welcome any ideas for functions you would support, already have nudges for a Ska band, Northern Soul night, the return of Elvis and not forgetting the unforgettable Kojaks.

Sporting events that will be shown on the large screen are the EURO Qualifiers and the 6 Nations rugby from Feb 2024. (Please note the 9th Sept Ukraine v England game will only be shown in snooker room). We have the lionesses playing too following their success last year, although on very early in mornings (details to follow on that one).

The regular Bingo (1st Monday of the month) & Quiz every Thursday along with Key to a Fortune (1st Friday & as advertised) all will continue throughout the year.

The club will continue on its refurbishment programme timeline to improve facilities in the club, please keep your ideas coming in as this will shape the priorities we as a committee face.

Bar staff would greatly appreciate empty glasses being returned to the Bar. The Bar Team are doing a fantastic job so let’s help them help us!! Also if your in the garden, please leave it how you found it, the foxes will have a filed day with any left over snacks and they quite like leaving the parasols in a stinky mess, so please return after use.

Your support throughout the year is needed, please come and have a chat with me at any time, although if it’s important suggestion or comment. It will need to be sent into committee as my memory may well be fuzzy from socializing (hic).  I'm looking forward to making new friends and cementing the ones I have already made in this great club of ours.

Charlie
PS. Take a look at notice board soon to see who your committee members are.
