As most of you should know, back in 2018 the committee were alarmed at the ever-increasing cost of subscription to Sky Sports. As a result of this we brought this to the attention of the membership and did a survey to which around a third of the members replied.
It was clear that whilst most respondents felt Sky Sports was a great facility the sheer cost of the membership was a drain on resource, not good value and monies could be better spent elsewhere.
Despite negotiating hard with Sky we were unable to reach what we felt was a satisfactory arrangement and as a result the committee voted to terminate our Sky Sports contract at its review period and we subsequently took BT Sports as an alternative.
It is clear some members prefer BT Sports and some Sky Sports In an ideal scenario we would have both available.
We are pleased to say that following protracted negotiations with Sky Sports we have negotiated a price that the committee feels will allow us to create a balance where Sky can be restored to the club and we can demonstrate the value of service to our members.
We intend to review this annually in line with the contractual period but essentially we need members to support this facility to minimise the impact on the valuable resource of club funds.
As a sports and social club with a wide demographic the committee recognise that there is a balance to be struck between facility usage and the cost to run. We recognise that not all club facilities need to be profitable to justify themselves but they do need to show fair value to the membership. We think this deal can now demonstrate reasonable value to the membership as well as keeping sports fans happy. After 12 months running this new deal we will have a clear picture of whether this has been achieved under this arrangement.
It has been a tough slog getting Sky to show us due consideration however we now have an opportunity to strike the balance we were looking for.
We are under no illusion that whilst Sky has a monopoly we are at risk of annual over inflated price hikes so I would ask all members to get on board with this for 12 months. We are now paying around half of the standard tariff Sky publish for non-profit making clubs such as ours.
We are contracted to BT sports until Feb 2020 and the same rationale will apply to this subscription at its renewal.
Just to be clear - Sky Sports has been restored with immediate effect, is available for viewing this weekend and for the next 12 months.
We would welcome any suggestions or assistance by members to help make this facility an on-going success.
