Thank you to all members who responded to our survey.
The majority of members who responded, want televised sports at a reasonable price – £400 or less per month, and are flexible with regards to the provider. The committee feel that Sky will continue to increase charges unless we take action. Irrespective of this action, we will continue to review this area of spend regularly to ensure we are getting value for our members. The Sky contract renewal price of £698 + vat per month is unacceptable to the majority of club members and we have decided to suspend it in favour of BT Sports for the time being. There is a massive saving in doing this and BT offers us a wider scope of football competitions in particular. We will continue to monitor value for members. We will also continue to negotiate with Sky and if we can achieve a fair market rate for their services, we will reinstate it. Ideally we’d like both providers if they offer value for money and were supported.
In the interim the savings made will be available for the club to invest in areas of improvement as and when they accrue and projects are identified and can be budgeted for.
Sky Sports contract ends on 22nd Feb and based on the results of the survey we will be terminating on Monday 25th January with 30 days notice so it finishes on Monday 25th Feb. The final televised game under this contract will be Man Utd v Liverpool on Sunday 24th Feb The termination of Sky services will not preclude us from trying to re negotiate a deal with Sky that would be in keeping with the results of survey. Reconnecting Sky could be available to us at any time should Sky want to price their monopoly of services sensibly.
In line with the results of the survey we have taken a 12-month subscription to BT sports (all with HD transmission) with effect at a discounted cost of £136.34 ex vat (from £170 + vat per month) on a 12-month contract. This looks to be excellent value given the current climate and in proportion to Sky.
This subscription will give us games from the FA CUP 4th Round onwards up to and including the final the Champions League knockout stages, the Europa cup knockout stages as well as a range of selected Premiership games. With 2 Premiership games on Tues/Weds next week
BT also operate a final score Saturday programme, so Saturday results services should not be affected.
BT offers other sports including boxing that may be of interest to members and we will explore the full range of coverage available to us over the course of the subscription.
Sky Sports will be running alongside BT Sports for the period 24th JANUARY TO 24TH FEBRUARY inclusive at which point BT will prevail.
